LACTATION CARE
While routine dyad care includes breastfeeding support, lactation visits are specialized visits to address breastfeeding concerns or complications. Lactation visits can occur during pregnancy to discuss risk factors for or concerns about potential breastfeeding complications, such as clients with a history of breast surgery, known decreased breast tissue, or previously difficult feeding experiences. Most lactation visits occur after the birth to manage complications such as a painful latch, difficulty latching, cracked or bruised nipples, or slow newborn weight gain.
These hour-long visits focus solely on solving the breastfeeding challenge at hand by creating a plan that is doable for you. Solutions may be as simple as adjusting the latch and trying a different position or as complex as temporarily pumping to allow for healing damaged tissue and supplementing. Each situation is unique and will be given the attention it deserves. The vast majority of complications can be solved to allow for long-term, satisfying breastfeeding relationships.
